Located in Northland, Waipu is a small town settled in 1853 by a group of Scottish highlanders.  Nearby Waipu Cove and Langs Beach are beach resorts with great swimming, fishing and surfing.

A major highlight of the area's calendar is the annual Highland Games held every New Year in Waipu as well as the annual Christmas Eve street parade.
